Discrepancies exist for the birthdate of Galdone; some biographies giving it as early as 1907. He emigrated to the U.S. from Hungary when he was 14, and as an adult began a career in books. His vibrant illustrations, both in books written by others and by himself, have delighted generations of young readers. Many remember the Miss Pickerell books by Ellen McGregor, illustrated by Galdone.
