Gregory Orloff
Fine artist-illustrator
Born Kiev, Russia 1890-died U.S. 1981
Internationally known artist Orloff studied and painted in several countries, but the bulk of his career was in the United States. The picture above is from the 1930s, when he was an artist with the Works Progress Administration, a program of the U.S. government. He also did book illustrations, as in this 1957 edition of a 1953 elementary school reader, Finding Favorites, from Lippincott. A sense of fun and whimsy permeate the book. Orloff's distinctive noses, for instance, indicate he may have used himself or family members as his models.
